How to make a dipping sauce for Gyozas, Dumplings, or Potstickers

    Ingredients and substitutions

Our dipping sauce is made with five simple ingredients. We keep it mild and easy to make so the whole family can enjoy a good dumpling sauce.

Regular soy sauce. This is the base ingredient for our dipping sauce. You can use regular soy sauce, tamari for a gluten-free option, dark soy sauce which is sweeter, or light soy sauce low in sodium.

Toasted sesame oil. We truly love the flavor that toasted sesame oil adds to your dipping sauce. If you want to make your gyoza dipping sauce spicy, try using chili sesame oil, equally delicious but adds that spicy element.

Maple Syrup. The perfect potsticker dipping sauce has to come with some sweetness. We like using maple syrup as it adds sweetness and that nutty flavor. You can substitute this ingredient by using regular or brown sugar, monk fruit, date syrup, or agave.

Rice vinegar. It adds acidity to our dipping sauces. You can substitute this ingredient by using apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar with a little bit of sugar.

Sesame seeds. Bring some texture to your dipping sauce by adding sesame seeds. We use white toasted sesame seeds but black sesame seeds can be used equally.

    Combine the ingredients

This simple Asian dumplings or gyoza dipping sauce is made by combining all the ingredients.

You can use a medium-sized pinch bowl to combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and maple syrup. Then serve the dipping sauce in smaller pinch bowls so people can have their own dipping bowl and add the sesame seeds to each bowl.

Enjoy with homemade gyozas, homemade dumplings, or rolls, or serve with your favorite store-bought dumplings.

Variations for our Gyoza Sauce Recipe

Make it spicy. If you like your dipping sauce with a bit of heat, substitute the sesame oil for chili sesame oil, a little chili oil, sriracha sauce, or add fresh chili or chili flakes.

Make it gluten-free. Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free dipping sauce.

Add more flavors. You can add grated fresh ginger and fresh garlic or other flavors such as five-spice powder.

Add other toppings. We top our quick and easy gyoza sauce with sesame seeds but you can add others such as sliced green onions, chili flakes, or fresh red chili.

    FAQ & Tips

What is gyoza dipping sauce made of?

Depending on the recipe it can vary. Gyoza dipping sauces are normally made with different Asian staples such as rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sweeteners. Then they contain fresh ingredients as a garnish or to add extra flavors such as ginger, garlic, red pepper flakes, or chilis.

How long can I keep the dipping sauce for?

If you don't add fresh ingredients such as ginger, garlic, or chili, you can keep the dipping sauce for longer (up to 7 days). This applies to the unused leftover sauce. If your sauce contains fresh ingredients, keep it in the fridge using an airtight container for 2 days max.
