How to make the best Strawberry Crumble
Ingredients
Strawberry Filling
Strawberries. For this recipe, we use juicy fresh strawberries as we normally bake our strawberry crumbles during late spring or early summer when they are in season. You can use frozen strawberries as well. Just make sure to leave them out of the freezer beforehand and remove any excess water.
Orange juice. Living in Spain, we can make freshly squeezed orange juice form our beautiful oranges. You can also use lemon juice (sweetened with some sweetener) or store-bought orange juice.
Cornflour. We use cornflour to make the filling thicker. Regular flour can be used instead of cornflour.
Sugar. We add a little bit of brown sugar to the filling. Alternatives to brown sugar are white sugar, maple syrup, cane sugar, or any other type of sweetener you like using. We normally skip this ingredient if our strawberries are really sweet. You can also, adjust the amount if your strawberries are a bit acidic.
Crumble Topping
Whole wheat flour. To make this recipe healthier, we use whole wheat flour. You can substitute it for all-purpose flour.
Rolled oats and almond flakes. Adding rolled oats and almond flakes to the topping mixture will make the strawberry crisp extra crunchy and more nutritious.
Vegan butter. We use the vegan butter from Naturli. You can use coconut oil as well.
Sugar or maple syrup. Use your favorite sweetener. We like using coconut sugar or maple syrup when baking.
Cinnamon. Finish your topping with some cinnamon powder.

Step-by-Step Method
- Wash and cut the strawberries and prepare the orange juice. Add the sliced strawberries to a pie or baking dish. Pour the orange juice, add the cornstarch and sugar, and combine all the ingredients, making sure the strawberries are well coated.
- Using a large mixing bowl add the flour, oats, almonds, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter. Combine all the ingredients using your hands until you have the desired crumbly consistency.
- Add the topping generously over the strawberry layer until they are all covered.
- Bake the arge mixing bowlfor 35 minutes at 180C (350F), or until the topping is golden brown and the strawberries are bubbling.

Variations to our Vegan Strawberry Crisp
Make it gluten-free. Strawberry crumble is not naturally gluten-free but our strawberry crumble can easily be made gluten-free. Use gluten-free flour instead of whole wheat or all-purpose flour. Our favorite flour to use is almond flour. Lastly, make sure you are using gluten-free oats, as not all the oats are gluten-free.
Use less sugar or skip this ingredient. We love baking crumbles for our kids, they especially love this Apple Crumble. When we cook for them, we reduce the amount of sugar or don't add any. If you are not adding sugar to this recipe, cook the strawberries in a pan with half of the orange juice beforehand. This will bring out the natural sweetness of the strawberries, almost caramelizing them.
Use frozen strawberries. Frozen fruit is such a good alternative when you don't have fresh fruit available or even to make sure you always have fruit at home. If you are using frozen strawberries, leave them out of the freezer beforehand and remove any excess water with a paper cloth.

Serving Suggestions
This strawberry dessert can be enjoyed as a dessert with a nice scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream, or as a snack served with coconut or oat yogurt. These are our two favorite ways to enjoy this spring crumble.

It's not quite strawberry season here but I'm so anxious for spring I made this anyway using frozen strawberries. Even though there are several inches of snow on the ground, it made us all feel like spring is right around the corner. I love the combination of whole wheat flour, almonds, and oats in the topping. Such a delicious vegan treat! Thank you for a great recipe!
