    What is Mango Lassi?

Mango Lassi is a traditional Indian drink that has won hearts around the world. It’s a creamy and sweet drink made by blending ripe mangoes with yogurt.

If you have eaten before at Indian restaurants, you've most probably seen this drink on the menu. Traditional Mango Lassi is made with dairy products.

Our vegan version swaps the dairy yogurt for a plant-based alternative, making it a perfect choice for those following a vegan diet or anyone who is lactose intolerant.

    Our Mango Lassi is:

    • Vegan
    • A snack or a drink to serve with your favorite meals
    • Family-friendly
    • Refreshing
    • Good for digestion
    • Dairy-free
    • Creamy

    Mango Health Benefits

Mangoes are such a good fruit to add to your weekly shopping list. Sweet, refreshing, and packed with nutrients and vitamins. According to Health.com, Mangoes are a great fruit to help prevent diabetes and to improve your digestion.

How to choose the perfect Mango

To make the perfect Vegan Mango Lassi, you need the perfect mangoes. We like buying our mangoes ripe but not fully ripened. You need to gently squeeze a few mangoes to make sure you are getting the best ones, just like buying avocados.

Normally, most mangoes we find are quite green so we need to find those already slightly softened. Then we leave them for a few days in the fruit bowl until they are fully ripe.

The mangoes we can find in Europe easily are Osteen mangoes. They become sweet and really juicy, which makes them a great choice for your Lassis. If you can get Indian mangoes such as Alphonso mangoes go for it!

    How to cut a Mango

Knowing how to cut a Mango the right way will save you some time and you will avoid making a mess.

Check Simply Recipes to learn how to do it in no time.

How to make the perfect Vegan Mango Lassi

    Ingredients

Mangoes. For mango lassi, you'll need ripe mangoes. If they are still not ripe, the lassi won't be as sweet and smooth. The best mangoes are Alphonso Mangoes that you can find during mango season, they have a sweet and buttery flesh. Indian mangoes are very sweet and tasty if you can get them during peak season.

Plant-based yogurt. Our favorite dairy-free yogurt to make lassis is coconut Greek-style yogurt. This type of yogurt is creamy and with a nice nutty flavor. For this recipe, you can also use another type of non-dairy yogurt such as plain soy yogurt.

Plant-based milk. You can choose any plant-based milk you like. For our Vegan Mango Lassi, we use unsweetened soy milk. Other options would be oat milk, cashew milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. Not so common options but also available and a great addition to your lassi would be pea, rice, or even quinoa milk.

Lime. Just a few drops of fresh lime juice are needed to add some tanginess to this drink. This ingredient is optional, but we love adding it. You can alternatively use lemon juice.

Maple Syrup. You can add a sweetener if you like your Lassi sweet. If you are already adding sweetened yogurt, you can skip this ingredient.

Cinnamon. We like adding just a little cinnamon to our Vegan Mango Lassi as our personal touch. It makes your drink more fragrant and enhances the sweetness of the mangoes. Other spices that go fantastic with your mango lassi are cardamom powder, turmeric, or nutmeg.

Crushed pistachios, and mint leaves for garnish.

    Vegan Mango Lassi Ingredients

    Step by Step method

Using a sharp knife, start by peeling the mangoes and cutting the flesh away from the pit into small pieces. Check Simply Recipes to learn how to peel a mango in no time.

Cutting the mango for mango lassi

Add the mango cubes, plant-based yogurt, plant-based milk, some lime juice, cinnamon, and optionally, maple syrup to a blender jar or food processor. At this point, you can add some ice cubes if you want to make this drink extra refreshing. Adding a pinch of salt, enhances the flavor of the rest of the ingredients.

Blend until smooth and garnish your Vegan Mango Lassi with crushed pistachios and fresh mint.

Serving Suggestions for Creamy Mango Lassi

Mango Lassi, just like this Vegan Banana Milk is a versatile drink. You can choose to have it as a refreshing start to the morning, a sweet afternoon pick-me-up, or a light dessert.

Garnishing your Vegan Lassi with crushed pistachios and mint, adds a different texture, and colors, and makes it perfect to serve with your Indian-style meals.

Yogurt is the perfect ingredient to serve with your spicy meals, as it helps to cool down. Our Vegan Mango Lassi goes beautifully with spicy curries such as this Gobi Manchurian.

    Store

You can store your homemade mango lassi in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Just make sure to give it a good stir before drinking.
